Vol. 439 No. 4

Written Answers. - Reduction of Mortality Rates.

Eamon Gilmore

Question:

88 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Health if he has responded to the Irish Heart Foundation's plan aiming to reduce mortality rates from coronary disease and stroke; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Deputy will be aware that I have anounced my intention to publish a national health strategy in the near future. This strategy will set goals and targets which will include a reduction in the mortality rates from coronary heart disease and stroke. I recently met with the Irish Heart Foundation to discuss their ongoing work in the area of heart disease prevention and assured them of my Department's continued support in this regard. In addition, I am pleased to advise the Deputy that my Department's Health Promotion Unit, at my request, has increased their support for the Irish Heart Foundation's community heart disease programmes by over 50 per cent in 1994.
