Vol. 439 No. 5

Written Answers. - Home Birth Costs.

Liz McManus

Question:

190 Ms McManus asked the Minister for Health in view of the refund being sought by persons (details supplied) in County Kilkenny from the South-Eastern Health Board to cover the cost of a home birth, if he will ensure that this refund is granted; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The South-Eastern Health Board has informed my Department that its last communication with the persons involved was in June 1993 and that no correspondence has arisen with them in relation to a refund of the costs incurred as part of a private arrangement for the domiciliary birth. The contribution which the board can make in such a case is determined under the maternity and infant care scheme.

The Deputy will be aware that a review of this scheme is nearing completion. I would intend to review current policy in relation to all aspects of the scheme, including domiciliary births, when I receive the report of the review group.
