Vol. 439 No. 5

Written Answers. - Paracetamol Poisoning.

Bernard Allen

Question:

192 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health the number of deaths recorded from paracetamol poisoning in the years 1987 to 1993; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Data on causes of death are compiled by the Central Statistics Office and published in the Annual Reports on Vital Statistics. The classification of cause is not sufficiently detailed to enable deaths due specifically to paracetamol to be separately identified. These deaths would be included in the general category, "Poisoning by Analgesics, Antipyretics and Antirheumatics". The numbers of deaths under this heading for each year from 1987 to 1990 are given below. Finalised data for more recent years are not yet available.
