Vol. 439 No. 5

Written Answers. - DSPCA.

Seán Barrett

Question:

93 Mr. Barrett asked the Minister for the Environment if, in view of the powers given to him under the Control of Dogs Act, 1986, he will provide a grant to the Dublin Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals to help them in the very valuable work they are carrying out and avoid their closure in 1995 due to lack of adequate funding.

My Department pays an annual sum to the Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in respect of support services relating to the 1986 Act provided by the society on a national basis. I have no proposals to pay a grant to any other society but it would, of course, be open to the relevant local authorities to do so.
