Vol. 439 No. 5

Written Answers. - Upgrading of Borough/District Councils.

Edward Nealon

Question:

104 Mr. Nealon asked the Minister for the Environment the process through which a borough council or urban district council can progress to county borough status; the qualifications needed for such a change in the order of priority; whether the creation of any new county borough council is now under consideration; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Legislation would be required to upgrade a borough or urban district council to county borough status. There are no proposals in this regard at present. Regarding the position of borough and urban district councils generally, I refer to the reply to Questions Nos.4 of 9 February, 1994 concerning local government reorganisation at sub-county level and to the statement issued by me on this matter on 27 January, a copy of which is available in the Oireachtas library.
