Dáil Éireann debate -
Wednesday, 2 Mar 1994

Vol. 439 No. 6

Request to Move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 30.

Before coming to the Order of Business I propose to deal with a notice of motion under Standing Order 30 from Deputy John Bruton. I call on Deputy Bruton to state the matter of which he has given notice.

I request the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 30 to debate a motion requiring the Government to lay before the Dáil for debate, in advance of finalisation, any proposals it may have to revise the timing, the priority or the nature of investments to be made under the National Development Plan arising from the Government's failure to obtain the annualised flow of funds it assumed it would get when it originally submitted the plan to the Dáil for approval. Any changes the Government is presenting to unelected — to use its own words — officials in Brussels should first be presented to the elected Members of the Dáil.

Having considered the matter fully I do not consider it to be one contemplated by the Standing Order.

Surprise, surprise.

Accordingly, I cannot grant leave to move the motion. The House will appreciate that we dealt with this matter in extenso yesterday at Question Time and it can be dealt with in this House further by way of substantive motion.
