Vol. 440 No. 2

Written Answers. - Bail Laws.

Ivor Callely

Question:

70 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Justice the recorded number of offences committed by people on bail during 1993; the submissions, if any, she has received on bail regulations; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

83 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Justice the number of crimes committed by persons while on bail during the months of November and December 1993; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 70 and 83 together.

Figures for 1993 in relation to the number of offences for which persons on bail were charged are not yet available. With regard to the latter part of Deputy Callely's question, I am not clear as to what he has in mind in so far as bail regulations are concerned. I can confirm, however, that concern has been expressed to me, both in and outside this House, about aspects of our current bail laws. This is a matter I dealt with in the reply I gave to a number of questions relating to bail on 3 February, 1994 (Official Report, Volume 438, Columns 709 to 712) and I refer the Deputy to that reply.
