Question:

80 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Justice the number of persons detained under the Criminal Justice Act, 1984, in each year since the Act came into force.

The powers of detention following arrest provided for by section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 came into effect on 1 July 1987. Figures in relation to the number of persons detained in each year since the Act came into force are as follows:

Question:

81 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Justice the number of persons detained each year since 1971 under section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act; the number of such persons who were subsequently charged with an offence in each year; and the number of such persons convicted in each year.

The number of persons arrested under section 30 of the Offences Against the Stage Act, 1939 in each of the years 1971 to 1993 and in 1994 to date are set out in the following table:
