Question:

105 Ms McManus asked the Minister for Justice the number of joint guardianship applications sought by unmarried fathers since the introduction of the Status of Children Act; and the number of these applications that were successful.

Statistics in relation to applications made under the Status of Children Act, 1987, have been maintained since the commencement of the legal year 1988-89.

The number of applications made by unmarried fathers for guardianship for the legal years from 1 August 1988 to 31 July 1993 was 1,160.

The number of orders granted in the same period was 989.
