Vol. 440 No. 5

Written Answers. - Equal Treatment of Women in Employment.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

30 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Equality and Law Reform when he intends to bring equality laws up to date to ensure equality for women in employment; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

In keeping with the commitment given in the Programme for a Partnership Government and the Programme for Competitiveness and Work, I intend to introduce legislation to amend the Anti-Discrimination (Pay) Act, 1974 and the Employment Equality Act, 1977 during 1994.

A range of proposals to amend the legislation are being considered in my Department. Formulation of the final policy proposals will have regard to the views of interested parties, the Recommendation of the Second Commission on the Status of Women and relevant decisions of the Court of the European Communities.
