47 Mr. Hogan asked the Minister for Finance the plans, if any, he has to revise the Ordnance Survey maps, which have not been revised since 1903, in view of their importance for various European schemes relating to agriculture; and if he will make a statement on the matter.
A major review of the Ordnance Survey mapping programme was undertaken in 1989 as a result of which the then Minister for Finance instructed that the following programme be undertaken:
an urban mapping programme (1:1000) which covers towns with a population of 1,000 and over. These maps are now for the most part up-to-date and available in printed and digital form;
a rural mapping programme (1:2500) involving a full resurvey of rural Ireland. Under this programme, the country is being systematically resurveyed using aerial photography and new technology.
a small scale mapping programme (1:5000) aimed at the tourism industry and comprising seventy-nine sheets. To date, nineteen sheets have been published with a further eight due to be published by the end of this year.
