Vol. 440 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - State-Sponsored Bodies Overtime Costs.

Austin Deasy

Question:

15 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Tourism and Trade the cost of overtime in each State-sponsored body under his control in the last financial year for which figures are available; and the number of individuals involved in each instance.

The cost of overtime in the last financial year, in each of the State-sponsored bodies under my control and the number of individuals involved in each instance is as follows: Bord Fáilte Eireann, cost of overtime was £146,000 and involved 121 staff; An Bord Tráchtála, cost of overtime was £28,335 and involved 27 staff; CERT, cost of overtime was £1,755 and involved 13 staff.

The Bord Fáilte and An Bord Tráchtála figures are in respect of the financial year ended 31 December 1993.

The CERT figures are in respect of the financial year ended 31 March 1993.

I thank the Minister for his reply. I have tabled the same question to every Minister. Obviously there is very little cost involved so it is not a major problem. I note that some Ministers are refusing to answer the question, saying that it is not a matter for them because State bodies are self-governing. It is unbelievable that the Government does not control these bodies. I am sure the Minister for Tourism and Trade shares my sentiments and he knows my intentions.

The cost of overtime for the three agencies under my remit is a small sum of money. I am glad the Deputy brought the matter to my attention because it is something I would not necessarily think of.
