Vol. 441 No. 1

Written Answers. - Lucan (Dublin) School Requirements.

Austin Currie

Question:

199 Mr. Currie asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the fact that St. Joseph's College, Lucan, County Dublin, was built to accommodate 575 pupils, that the current enrolment is 711, that there is a long waiting list and that demand will inevitably increase due to the construction of a number of housing estates in the Lucan area; and the plans, if any, she has to provide necessary additional accommodation at the school.

Austin Currie

Question:

200 Mr. Currie asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the increase in demand for school places in the Lucan area, County Dublin, due to the construction of a number of new housing estates; and the plans, if any, she has to cater for this demand.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 199 and 200 together.

With regard to housing developments in the Lucan area and their implications for post-primary education I would refer the Deputy to my reply to Parliamentary Question No. 259 of 15 February 1994.

My Department has received applications from the managements of all three post-primary schools in Lucan, most recently from St. Joseph's College, for grant-aid towards the provision of additional accommodation.

My Department has been assessing the short and long term post-primary needs of the Lucan area and, in the light of that assessment, the likely accommodation requirements of the three post-primary schools. It is hoped to convey decisions on their applications to the school authorities concerned shortly.
