Vol. 441 No. 3

Written Answers - Alcoholism Treatment Programme.

Dinny McGinley

Question:

52 Mr. McGinley asked the Minister for Health whether a comprehensive treatment programme exists for alcoholism for both GMS and VHI patients; if so, the treatment programmes available in each instance; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

A comprehensive range of services for the treatment of alcoholism exists for both GMS and VHI patients. Services include detoxification, hospital in-patient residential programmes, residential programmes in specialist alcohol centres, out-patient programmes, day programmes and counselling. The services available are detailed in the Directory of Alcohol, Drugs and Related Services in the Republic of Ireland.

There needs to be a greater emphasis on preventing alcohol related problems. Prevention is a key element in the formulation of a national alcohol policy being developed by my Department's Health Promotion Unit. This policy will address the broader economic, social, educational, cultural and health factors which impinge on alcohol use and misuse.
