63 Mr. Connor asked the Minister for Health if he will give a comprehensive update of progress on the transfer of the General Register of Births, Marriages and Deaths to Roscommon town; and if he will give a date on which the transfer is expected to take place.
172 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for Health the offices under the control of his Department which have been relocated from Dublin under the decentralisation programme since the year 1987; the locations of the new offices; the number of jobs transferred; and the further proposals, if any, he has in this regard.
No office under the control of my Department has been relocated from Dublin under the decentralisation programme. However, it has been decided to decentralise the General Register Office, which is responsible for records of births, mariages and deaths, to Roscommon town. The first step is the computerisation of the records held in the office to provide the basis for a proper service to the public throughout the country. This work will be carried out in Roscommon and will provide employment for a substantial number of people from the area for the next two or three years. After the office is decentralised a facility for genealogists will be maintained in Dublin.
