Vol. 441 No. 5

Written Answers. - Importation of Ostrich Eggs and Chicks.

Seamus Kirk

Question:

142 Mr. Kirk asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the relevant health control regulations in relation to the importation of ostrich eggs and ostrich chicks into the country.

Conditions for the importation of ostrich eggs and ostrich chicks into Ireland from other EU member states are laid down in Council Directive 90/539/EEC on animal health conditions governing intra-Community trade in and imports from third countries of live poultry and hatching eggs. In particular, the directive provides for the consignment of ostrich eggs or chicks to be accompanied by a health certificate stating that the conditions laid down in the directive have been fulfilled.

No conditions have yet been laid down for the importation of ostrich eggs or chicks from countries outside the European Union. Consequently, importation of such eggs or birds into Ireland is not permitted.
