23 Mr. Cullen asked the Minister for Finance the number of individuals who claim tax relief on medical insurance who also pay tax at the 48 per cent rate; and the number of individuals in total who claim such relief.
It is estimated that some 365,000 taxpayers will claim tax relief on medical insurance premia in respect of the income tax year 1994-95.
Assuming the enactment of the changes proposed in this year's Finance Bill, it is estimated that some 217,000 taxpayers claiming relief on medical insurance premia in repect of the income tax year 1994-95 will be liable to tax at the 48 per cent rate.
