Vol. 442 No. 1

Written Answers. - Facilities for Remand Prisoners.

Jim Mitchell

Question:

40 Mr. J. Mitchell asked the Minister for Justice if any remand prisoners are detained in cells that do not have in-cell sanitary facilities.

Approximately one quarter of all prisoners held on remand have access to in-cell sanitation facilities. As the Deputy is aware, it is the policy of my Department to provide in-cell sanitation facilities as part of the ongoing programme of major refurbishment projects in the existing prisons and of course, also in the two new prisons being planned at present. There will, therefore, be an increasing availability of in-cell sanitation facilities for all prisoners, including those on remand.
