Vol. 442 No. 1

Written Answers. - Pensions Legislation.

Frances Fitzgerald

Question:

67 Ms F. Fitzgerald asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will introduce the promised Pensions Bill during the current session of Dáil Éireann.

The Pensions Act, 1990 was a major piece of legislation which set down standards for occupational pension schemes in relation to preservation of benefits for early leavers, funding standards, disclosure of information to members, standards for trustees including provision for member trustees, and equality of treatment for men and women. The Act also provided for the establishment of the Pensions Board to monitor the implementation of the Act.

The Pensions Act is detailed and complex and a number of amendments have been made to the Act since 1990. At this stage there are a number of further areas where amendments are required. The details of these amendments are being considered in my Department at present and I will be bringing the necessary amending legislation before the House at an early date, if possible in the current Dáil session.
