Vol. 442 No. 7

Written Answers. - Register of Chiropodists.

Liz O'Donnell

Question:

63 Ms O'Donnell asked the Minister for Health the progress, if any, he has made with the promised provision of a register of chiropodists; and when this register will be available to this group.

The present position in relation to the provision of chiropody services is that health boards resource their chiropody manpower needs by reference to an approved list of chiropodists. This independent assessment committee is a non-statutory body which was established in 1975 with the agreement of the Department of Health.

I am aware that the criteria for inclusion on the approved list have been an issue for many chiropodists in recent years. I have now decided to establish an alternative assessment mechanism for chiropodists to determine suitability to provide services to eligible health board patients. The necessary arrangements will be put in place in the very near future.
