Vol. 442 No. 9

Ceisteanna — Questions Written Answers. - Research Facilities.

Frances Fitzgerald

Question:

39 Ms F. Fitzgerald asked the Minister for Health if he intends that the research facilities at the Office of the Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages which will remain in Dublin will provide full certification facilities as well as research facilities to those intending to use the service; and the progress made to date on computerisation of records.

While I have decided that a facility for genealogists and other researchers will be provided in Dublin when the General Register Office is decentralised to Roscommon Town, I have not as yet decided whether any service additional to research facilities will be provided. This will depend to some extent on the nature and extent of changes arising from computerisation. With regard to the computerisation of the records, an Information Technology project team has been set up, an IT feasibility study completed and IT systems options for the projects are being examined.
