Vol. 443 No. 1

Written Answers. - Clothing Allowance.

Tony Gregory

Question:

52 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Social Welfare the reason a person (details supplied) in Dublin 1 who is on a FÁS course and in receipt of single parent allowance was refused a clothing allowance for her child who is making his Confirmation; and if an appeal can be expedited in view of the fact that the child is making his Confirmation on Saturday, 21 May 1994.

Under the exceptional needs provision of the supplementary welfare allowance scheme a health board may make a single payment to meet an exceptional need which could include assistance with the cost of clothing.

I understand from the Eastern Health Board, which is responsible for the administration of the scheme in the Dublin area, that the person concerned applied for assistance with clothing costs but was refused because her case was not considered to be exceptional.

The person in question appealed the decision and the Board's Appeals Officer has advised that her appeal has been disallowed. The appellant has been notified of the outcome of the appeal.
