Vol. 443 No. 2

Written Answers. - Foreign Births Registration.

Nora Owen

Question:

36 Mrs. Owen asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs when work commenced on the backlog of foreign births registration applications in view of the passing of the Irish Nationality and Citizenship Act, 1994; and the number of registrations which have taken place since the passing of this Act.

The Irish Nationality and Citizenship Act, 1994, became law on its signature by the President on 1 May. Implementation of the Act required the introduction of regulations signed by the Minister for Foreign Affairs and the Minister for Finance. These regulations — known as the Foreign Births (Amendment) Regulations, 1994 — have now been made and work will begin immediately on the backlog of foreign births registration.
