Vol. 443 No. 3

Written Answers. - School Examinations.

Dinny McGinley

Question:

32 Mr. McGinley asked the Minister for Health the number of examinations each school child can expect in the course of his/her school life; whether all children are currently in receipt of one or more examinations during national school life; if medical attention in each case is followed up where necessary; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The school health examinations are based on a comprehensive medical examination of all new entrants to national school, a selective medical examination of children in the 9-10 age group and an examination of other children selected on the basis of information furnished about them by their parents, teachers, nurses or other interested parties.

All necessary follow-up services for defects discovered at school health examinations are provided free of charge by health boards.

The Strategy for Effective Healthcare in the 1990s — Shaping a Healthier Future specifies that there will be a detailed review of the pre-school and child health services during 1994.
