Richard Bruton

Question:

60 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Health if his attention has been drawn to the unreliable performance of some machines that are available for radiotherapy in St. Lukes Hospital, Dublin 6; the number of breakdowns that have occurred in the past 12 months; and if he will make money available to replace old equipment in this, the National Centre for Radiotherapy.

Charles Flanagan

Question:

155 Mr. Flanagan asked the Minister for Health if his attention has been drawn to the inadequate facilities at the National Radiology Therapy Centre, St. Luke's Hospital, Dublin 6; if his attention has been further drawn to the fact that the equipment is in need of replacement; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 60 and 155 together.

Following the decision in November 1993 by the board of St. Luke's and St. Anne's Hospital to consolidate services on one site, a joint project team comprising representatives of the hospital and officers of my Department was appointed to plan for and oversee the transfer of services at present provided on St. Anne's site on to the St. Luke's Hospital campus. One of the key areas being examined by the project team is the equipment needs of the new hospital which is to be developed as a national centre of excellence in the treatment and care of cancer patients. I have been informed by the project team that the development brief will be available within a matter of weeks.

Radiotherapy treatment in St. Luke's and St. Anne's Hospital is delivered by the hospitals linear accelerators, by a Selectron machine or by Cobalt Unit. I am informed by the hospital that the total unscheduled downtime between all the equipment items in the 12 month period to 30 April 1994 was 347.5 hours. I am also informed by the hospital that where any of these equipment items are temporarily out of commission, arrangements are made to have patients treated on the available machines and I have been assured that there is no interruption to patient treatment or that patient care is not compromised in any way.
