Vol. 443 No. 3

Written Answers. - Suicide Statistics.

Andrew Boylan

Question:

83 Mr. Boylan asked the Minister for Health the number of suicides in this country in the past three years where the person had previously received medical or psychiatric treatment prior to suicide; the percentage that had received no such treatment; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The statistics which are compiled in relation to suicide do not include details of the kind requested by the Deputy. My Department and the Southern Health Board are jointly funding a research project to assess the effect on the rate of suicide of more active intervention by the mental health services with those who attempt suicide.
