Vol. 443 No. 6

Written Answers. - Residential Property Tax and Service Charge.

Ivan Yates

Question:

33 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for Finance the number of meetings that have taken place of the committee established by the Government to investigate the merging of residential property tax and the service charges paid to local authorities; and when its report is due to be finalised in this regard.

I first announced the review of property tax immediately after the budget on 26 January last. However, because of the work on the budget and the Finance Bill it was not envisaged that this review would commence until after the Finance Bill had been passed. My Department has now commenced work on the preparation of the general report on property tax. When it is completed it will be submitted to the tax strategy group which was set up last year to develop proposals in the whole area of taxation. The tax strategy group will consider the report prepared by my Department. They will then develop any proposals which they consider appropriate and any proposals which will emerge will be considered by the Government before the next budget.
