Vol. 443 No. 7

Written Answers. - Teacher Training.

Jim Higgins

Question:

223 Mr. J. Higgins asked the Minister for Education if she has met with the Higher Education Authority in relation to the number of places available in the various colleges for students who wish to do the Higher Diploma in Education; and, if so, if there will be any extra places available for students as a result of the meeting.

I plan to meet the chairman of the Higher Education Authority in the near future. In relation to the question of teacher training places I refer the Deputy to my reply to a parliamentary question on 31 May in which I indicated that the number of places in postgraduate teacher training in 1994 will be 980. I went on to state that this is a reduction of 47 on the total number of places for postgraduate training in 1993 and an increase of over 200 for 1991 and 1992 and indeed is a significant increase for all of the previous years back to 1988.
