Written Answers. - Departmental Staff.

Ivan Yates

Question:

42 Mr. Yates asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs the full complement of staff plus their salary details employed by him as Minister for Foreign Affairs and through the office of the Tánaiste; and the way in which this compares to previous office holders of both positions in past Governments.

My Private Office and my Constituency Office as Minister for Foreign Affairs are staffed by a Private Secretary, one Higher Executive Officer, two Executive Officers, three Clerical Officers and two Clerical Assistant/Typists. These posts are filled on a full-time basis by established civil servants who are paid in accordance with the appropriate Civil Service pay scales. There are also three staff employed on a contract basis and the cost of the salaries for these staff is estimated at £75,357 for 1994.

Under the previous Government the Private Office and Constituency Office of the then Minister for Foreign Affairs were staffed by a Private Secretary, two Executive Officers, two Clerical Officers and two Clerical Assistant Typists. These posts were filled by established civil servants who were paid in accordance with the appropriate Civil Service pay scales. There were also four staff employed on a contract basis. The cost of their salaries was £61,716 per annum.

Under the second last Government, the Private Office and Constituency Office of the then Minister for Foreign Affairs were staffed by a Private Secretary, two Executive Officers, six Clerical Officers and three Clerical Assistant/Typists. These posts were filled by established civil servants who were paid in accordance with the appropriate Civil Service pay scales. In addition one person was employed on a contract basis at a cost of £11,478 per annum.

In addition to 18 posts filled by established civil servants, the Office of the Tánaiste has five staff working on contract; the cost of the salaries for these latter staff is estimated at £151,836 for 1994. As the Office was established only at the beginning of 1993 there are no comparable figures for previous Governments.
