Vol. 443 No. 7

Written Answers. - Pricing Agreements for UK Newspapers/Magazines.

Richard Bruton

Question:

80 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment whether the Director of Consumer Affairs has drawn to his attention a number of features in the distributors' pricing arrangements for United Kingdom magazines/newspapers which prevent keener prices to Irish consumers; if so, when this was drawn to his attention; and the action, if any, he has taken as a result.

I am informed that the Director of Consumer Affairs drew the attention of my predecessor to concerns which he has relating to the pricing arrangements for United Kingdom magazines and newspapers which may be anti-competitive.

I am, this week, publishing the Competition (Amendment) Bill, 1994 which will provide for public enforcement of competition. It is proposed to empower the Competition Authority to investigate anti-competitive arrangements including the power to take actions in courts.
