Vol. 443 No. 8

Written Answers. - Castlerea (Roscommon) Prison.

Avril Doyle

Question:

23 Mrs. Doyle asked the Minister for Justice the time scale for the provision of a new prison in Castlerea, County Roscommon.

Construction work has already been commenced on the first phase of the new prison at Castlerea — the building of the perimeter wall and associated works. Planning for the next phase of the work, involving the refurbishment and adaptation of the existing hospital buildings and the construction of some new purpose-built facilities, is being progressed as a matter of priority. While it is difficult at this very early stage to predict a precise timetable for the completion of the project, it is my intention that construction will proceed as quickly as possible and I would hope to have the new prison completed by the end of 1996.
