Vol. 444 No. 2

Written Answers. - Extension of Speed Limits.

Pádraic McCormack

Question:

29 Mr. McCormack asked the Minister for the Environment when the proposals for the extension of speed limits which were submitted by Galway Borough Council to his Department in 1993 will be implemented; the plans, if any, there are for the necessary extension of speed limits in the Galway city area; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Proposals for a limited review of speed limits in Galway city were submitted to my Department by Galway Corporation in August 1993. The local authority was advised, in January 1994, that more detailed information would be necessary to facilitate the making of regulations and the proposals were returned to Galway Corporation at that time. No further submission has since been received from the corporation.

Part V of the Road Traffic Act, 1994 empowers county councils and county borough corporations to make by-laws to apply local speed limits without the need for the approval of the Minister for the Environment. I will commence that part of the Act as soon as practicable.
