Dáil Éireann debate -
Thursday, 23 Jun 1994

Vol. 444 No. 3

Request to move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 30.

Before coming to the Order of Business I propose to deal with a notice of motion under Standing Order 30 from Deputy De Rossa. I now call on Deputy De Rossa to state the matter of which he has given notice to me.

In accordance with Standing Order 30 I wish to request leave to move the Adjournment of the Dáil to discuss the escalating crisis facing TEAM Aer Lingus following the laying off of more than 800 workers yesterday, the increasing danger of the dispute spreading to Aer Lingus itself and the need for the Government to clarify its position in view of the clear differences between the Government parties on the approach to be adopted and the urgent necessity of Government intervention to try to secure a settlement of the crisis. In view of the importance of this matter to the national economy and in particular to the economy of Dublin——

The Deputy may not elaborate on the message he has sent to me and which I approved.

——I appeal to you, a Cheann Comhairle, to agree today to this debate so that we may address this important issue.

This is quite disorderly, Deputy. I gave the Deputy permission to raise a certain matter. There is no room for elaboration.

On a point of order, a Cheann Comhairle, I simply pointed out that this is an important matter for the national economy and the economy of north Dublin. It is quite inappropriate for you to continue to interrupt me when I seek to make a political point, which is the reason I was elected.

You will obey the procedure at this time.

It is the same excuse. The procedures prevent this House from debating an important national issue.

Having considered the matter fully I do not consider it to be one contemplated by the Standing Order and, therefore, I cannot grant leave to move the motion.

That is a disgrace.
