Vol. 444 No. 3

Written Answers. - Lime Usage.

Donal Moynihan

Question:

20 Mr. Moynihan asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the plans, if any, he has to introduce a scheme for the increased usage of lime.

The new rural environment protection scheme — REPS — offers an opportunity for farmers to reduce soil acidity by the use of lime thus reducing the requirements for other nutrients. The REPS offers an attractive grant incentive to participating farmers who implement an appropriate liming programme to correct their soil acidity, to maintain their overall soil fertility levels in today's competitive market and to farm in an environmentally friendly fashion, thus increasing lime usage.
