Vol. 444 No. 3

Written Answers. - Forestry Sector Review.

Brendan Smith

Question:

55 Mr. B. Smith asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry when the current review of the forestry sector will be completed; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I expect the strategy for the development of the forestry sector to the year 2015 to be completed before the end of the year. Work has already begun and over 100 submissions have been received from interested parties and the public generally.

I view this exercise as of major significance. It is the first time that a comprehensive strategic plan for the development of forestry in Ireland has been prepared. The plan will place particular emphasis on the creation of sustainable employment, and is aimed at maximising the value of the forestry sector to the economy and at integrating forestry development into wider rural development policy.
