Vol. 444 No. 3

Written Answers. - Appointment of Remedial Teacher.

Charles Flanagan

Question:

119 Mr. Flanagan asked the Minister for Education if she has received an application for a remedial teacher in respect of a school (details supplied) in County Laois; if, having examined the circumstances surrounding the application, she will sanction the provision of a remedial teacher; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I recently announced the appointment of 100 additional remedial teachers to primary schools, with effect from September next. This will bring to 1,133 the total number of remedial teachers in place in the primary sector.

The posts were allocated on the basis of priority of need, following the collection and analysis of data from schools by my Department's Primary Inspectorate.

My Department received an application for a shared remedial teacher from the school in question. Unfortunately, the application was not successful on this occasion.

I will be keeping the question of further need in this area under review and the needs of all schools, including the school mentioned by the Deputy, will be considered in this context.
