Vol. 445 No. 6

Written Answers. - Third Level Student Support.

Frances Fitzgerald

Question:

469 Ms F. Fitzgerald asked the Minister for Education the plans, if any, she has to introduce special measures for PAYE families marginally above the threshold who have children attending third level education; and her views on the current levels in place. [347/94]

Under the terms of the third level student support schemes the reckonable income limits are subject to increase for families who have more than one child attending third level education. For instance under the 1994 schemes the relevant reckonable income limits are increased by £2,000 where there are two children attending full-time third level education, by £4,000 for three such children and so on, by increments of £2,000.

The problem of candidates who are marginally above the income limits is one of a number of issues which is subject to consideration in the context of the annual review of the student support arrangements. I am, however, subject to resource constraints in attempting to introduce improvements in the schemes.
