Vol. 445 No. 7

Written Answers. - Health Promotion Costs.

Helen Keogh

Question:

220 Ms Keogh asked the Minister for Health the amount of money the Department of Health spends on anti-smoking health education each year; the amount of money spent each year on treating smoking related diseases; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [923/94]

In 1993 my Department's Health Promotion Unit spent approximately £380,000 on various public information campaigns aimed at raising public awareness of the dangers of smoking. Current projections for 1994 would suggest that expenditure this year will be of a similar magnitude. It is not possible to accurately estimate the expenditure on treating smoking related illnesses because of the many conditions which are contributed to by smoking.
