Vol. 445 No. 8

Written Answers. - School Transport.

Liz McManus

Question:

149 Ms McManus asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to concerns that exist in relation to the school transport system; and the steps, if any, she will take to secure a safer and more cost-effective system. [1281/94]

I am aware that the school transport scheme has been the subject of criticism from time to time. Bus Éireann, which operates the service on behalf of my Department, is justifiably proud of its safety record in operating the school transport scheme. Special emphasis is placed on safety and, to this end, a wide range of checking procedures are in place to ensure a safe and reliable service. The operation of the scheme is examined on an ongoing basis to ensure that these high standards of safety are maintained. The scheme is also subject to constant review to ensure the delivery of a cost-effective service.
