Vol. 445 No. 8

Written Answers. - Trinity House, Dublin.

Ray Burke

Question:

77 Mr. R. Burke asked the Minister for Education if she will give details of the recent fire at the Oberstown/Trinity House complex at Lusk, County Dublin; and if she has satisfied herself with the present arrangements for the provision of security for the local residents. [1066/94]

The fire in question took place in a unit at Trinity House School on the evening of 28 July 1994. The fire was deliberately started in his bedroom by a boy who was detained at the school.

Units of the fire brigade, the ambulance service and the gardaí were called to the school and the fire was quickly brought under control. Thankfully, there were no injuries to the boys or staff as a result of the fire.

Arrangements are currently being made to repair the damage done and it is expected that the unit in question will be back in service by late December, 1994.

Every effort is made to ensure that the facilities at Oberstown are operated in a manner which does not present any danger to local residents. Security arrangements are kept under constant review and senior management of the centres meet with local residents from time to time to discuss any concerns which they may have in relation to the centres. In addition, it is the practice to appoint local community representatives to the boards of management of these facilities so as to allow them a direct input into the operation of the centres.
