Vol. 445 No. 8

Written Answers. - State Certification of Sailing Schools/Clubs.

Eamon Gilmore

Question:

98 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for the Marine the plans, if any, he has to establish a system of State certification for sailing schools and clubs who are not members of the Irish Yachting Association; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1241/94]

Twenty-eight sailing schools (about 75 per cent of all such schools in the country) operate under schemes run by the Irish Sailing Association. The safety standards under these voluntary schemes are set in consultation with, and are monitored by, the Department.

While there are no immediate plans to establish a national certification system as proposed by the Deputy, the proposal will be examined as part of the Department's current review of the regulation of pleasure craft safety.
