Vol. 445 No. 8

Written Answers. - Mayo General Hospital Dialysis Unit.

Enda Kenny

Question:

117 Mr. E. Kenny asked the Minister for Health if he will make a statement on the commencement of operations of the dialysis unit at Mayo General Hospital, County Mayo; the commencement date and staffing arrangements for the unit; and his views on its impact for dialysis patients in the Western Health Board area. [1206/94]

The position is that the Renal Dialysis Unit at the Mayo General Hospital is scheduled to receive patients on Monday next, the 17th October, 1994. I was pleased to have been in a position to allocate an additional £200,000 to the Western Health Board this year for the commencement of this service. The staffing arrangements are as follows:

1 Medical Registrar,

1 Ward Sister,

6 Staff Nurses,

2 Domestics/Attendants.

The service will commence on a phased basis initially, and will gradually be developed to the point where all dialysis patients from the Mayo area will be treated at Mayo General Hospital. This development will eliminate the need for Mayo patients to travel to Galway for dialysis treatment, and will result in a quicker return to their home environment following treatment.
