Vol. 445 No. 9

Written Answers. - Alleged Harassment of Irish Citizens by Nigerian Authorities.

Austin Deasy

Question:

45 Mr. Deasy asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs if his attention has been drawn to harassment by Nigerian authorities of Irish nationals working and living in Nigeria; if so, the protests, if any, he has made through diplomatic channels; and the results of any such protests. [1446/94]

I am not aware of any general harassment of Irish citizens by Nigerian authorities.

Some isolated instances have come to the attention of the Embassy in Lagos. In general, the Embassy finds that the most effective way to resolve such problems is by informal contacts, although formal protests are occasionally necessary.

If Deputy Deasy has details of any particular case or cases I will have them investigated and appropriate action taken.
