Vol. 446 No. 3

Written Answers. - School Transport.

Enda Kenny

Question:

307 Mr. E. Kenny asked the Minister for Education if school transport will be approved in a case (details supplied) in County Mayo. [2136/94]

The three families in question reside in the Tourmakeady post-primary centre catchment area but one family only is fully eligible under the terms of the post-primary school transport scheme for transport to that centre.

The first and second families named by the Deputy are ineligible because they live less than three miles from the centre and may be allowed concessionary transport only, subject to certain conditions. It is my understanding that one of these families does not use the school transport service at all.

The children of the third family named by the Deputy are eligible for transport. However, the extension sought could cost up to £5.61 a day.

All three families live between 1.1 and 1.7 miles from the route of the school transport service and are considered to have reasonable standard of service.
In the circumstances the existing arrangement is the the most that can be offered.
