92 Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Minister for Social Welfare if the Eastern Health Board will continue to pay supplementary welfare allowance to a person (details supplied) in Dublin 12 who pays rental every week via a bank lodgement in view of the fact that the person concerned has only £61 per week preretirement pension, has no other income and will be out of home if the Eastern Health Board does not continue to meet its commitment. Under the supplementary welfare allowance scheme a health board may pay a supplement in respect of an eligible person's private rented accommodation.
I understand from the Eastern Health Board, which administers the scheme in the Dublin area, that the person in question had his rent supplement withdrawn because the board was not satisfied that a legitimate tenancy agreement existed between the client and the landlord, who is a close relative.
The person in question has been notified by the board of his right of appeal; however, it is understood that no appeal has been lodged to date.
