Vol. 446 No. 7

Written Answers. - County Mayo Graveyard.

Enda Kenny

Question:

136 Mr. E. Kenny asked the Minister for the Marine if he will make an immediate allocation of funds to protect the remains of people buried at the old graveyard at Cross, Binghamstown, Belmullet, County Mayo, where the wall has been washed away and where human remains are likely to be exposed in the future; if he will have arrangements made for an immediate investigation to be carried out into this matter; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2916/94]

The list of coast protection projects for 1995 for inclusion under the Operational Programme for the Environment is being finalised. Projects must fulfil specific economic, social and environmental criteria set down so as to ensure the best use of limited public funding.

I am sorry to learn of the exposure of human remains but their burial and reburial is a matter for the local authority. I have however asked officials to investigate the concerns raised by the Deputy and I will advise him of the outcome of those inquiries. I am anxious to be of assistance.
