Vol. 447 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Written Answers. - Live Cattle Exports.

Tony Gregory

Question:

252 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry if it is the case that in the region of 70 per cent of live cattle exported to European destinations from Ireland are calves destined for the veal trade; and if he will give the exact details. [3525/94]

In the period January-October, 1994, 92,227 live cattle were exported to continental European destinations. Of these 59,686 or 64.7 per cent were calves. The ultimate end-use of these animals is unknown, although the breeds generally exported to these destinations are those which are not best suited for beef production.
