Vol. 448 No. 1

Written Answers. - Roads Funding.

Edward Nealon

Question:

76 Mr. Nealon asked the Minister for the Environment in view of the commitment in the Government of Renewal programme to provide additional resources to upgrade and adequately maintain county roads, if he will be in a position to provide substantial additional resources this year to the local authorities for this purpose; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1629/95]

Brendan Smith

Question:

81 Mr. B. Smith asked the Minister for the Environment if he will increase the funding to Cavan County Council for 1995 in respect of regional and county roads in view of the need for further investment in the county's road network so as to bring it up to an acceptable standard; and if he will make the allocation at an early date. [1665/95]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 76 and 81 together.

The Government recognises the need for substantial State funding to supplement local authorities' own expenditure on the maintenance and improvement of non-national roads and is determined to provide the maximum possible support consistent with overall budgetary strategy. This year's road grants will be determined and notified to local authorities as soon as possible.
