Vol. 448 No. 2

Adjournment Debate Matters.

I wish to advise the House of the following matters in respect of which notice has been given under Standing Order 20 and the name of the Member in each case: (1) Deputy Kenneally—the problems that arise on a national basis as a result of the granting of tax concessions to farmers to plant trees and particularly the difficulties in the Mount Mellary area of County Waterford; (2) Deputy Ellis— the failure of the Department of Education to extend insurance cover to the area adjacent to the sports complex at Carrick-on-Shannon, County Leitrim which it is proposed to use for the schools buses serving the new comprehensive school; (3) Deputy Frances Fitzgerald—the ongoing problem in relation to patient treatment and the breakdown of machinery in St. Luke's Hospital, Rathgar, Dublin 6; (4) Deputy O'Rourke—the steps, if any, it is proposed to take to meet with representatives from Borland International, Swords, County Dublin to save the 83 jobs at risk in the company; (5) Deputy Sargent—the extent of the Government's involvement in finding a buyer for Borland International, Swords, County Dublin and the need to sell the plant as a going concern so that the 83 jobs at the plant can be saved; (6) Deputy Eric Byrne—the sharp increase in the amount of smuggled cigarettes and tobacco entering this country; the sale of these products by illegal traders; and the need for concerted action by both customs officials and the Garda Síochána to stamp out this black market.

The matters raised by Deputies Frances Fitzgerald, Ellis, O'Rourke, and Kenneally have been selected for discussions.
