Vol. 448 No. 2

Written Answers. - Long-Term Patient Charges.

Michael McDowell

Question:

63 Mr. M. McDowell asked the Minister for Health when his Department will publish its national guidelines on whether health boards should retain portions of pensions paid to their long term psychiatric patients; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1784/95]

Limerick East): I presume that the Deputy is referring to the commitment in the health strategy to amend the legislation governing the levying of charges on long-stay patients who have income. While the principle has always been accepted that people taken into long term care should contribute from any income towards the cost of their maintenance, the existing legislation gives rise to anomalies and inequities as regards the charges which can be made and the basis upon which they can be levied. The legislation will therefore be amended to provide a clearer and fairer basis for these contributions towards the cost of long term maintenance.

Liz O'Donnell

Question:

64 Ms O'Donnell asked the Minister for Health the number of people who have contracted AIDS to date; the number that have died from AIDS to date; the number that are now HIV positive; the number of new cases and deaths from AIDS that occurred in 1994 and to date in 1995; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1785/95]

Limerick East): Statistical information in HIV and AIDS is available up to the end of 1994. There is no data available at present for 1995.

The information requested by the Deputy is as follows:—

Cases of AIDS

443

Deaths from AIDS

224

Number of HIV Positive Individuals (up to end November, 1994)

1,528

Number of New Cases of AIDS during 1994

67

Number of Deaths from AIDS during 1994

44

It is important that HIV/AIDS programmes and services are developed to respond to the evolving epidemiology of the disease in this country. My Department will continue to work closely with the health boards and the voluntary agencies to provide the necessary framework of services.
